CASS Toastmasters Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contest – 25th September 2017
It’s this time of the year again!
Every Toastmasters club holds its own Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contest. The club members compete
The contest looks different than normal meetings. First, only the club members are allowed to join the competition. Second, the competitors are being evaluated by judges, who are usually members of other clubs. The judges, however, do not share their evaluations with the speakers. Instead, they give their evaluation to the Chief Judge. Chief Judge then adds everything up and announces the winners.
The audience does not vote as at normal club meetings.
Each Humorous speech needs to fit between 5 and 7 minutes. If the speech is 30 seconds below or above the limits, the contestant is disqualified.
For Table Topics speeches, the time limit is 1 to 2 minutes with the same 30 seconds rule as in Humorous speeches.
The meeting started with our President, Leslie Bediade, briefly explaining the rules of the contest. Then, the contests began.
In the Humorous Speech Contests, we had James, Ian and Paul delivering speeches.
First was James telling us how he is living the dream and explained how pickup lines changed over the time.
Next was Paul. Paul told us some of his adventures as a dad and how they taught him to manage stress.
Third was Ian, sharing his experiences with budget holidays in “You get what you paid for” speech.
The second part of the contest was the Table Topics Contest. Each contestant had the same question to answer. The question was:
You came back from the airport. You open your suitcase and you notice it is not yours. Explain to the audience what do you see inside.
And then one by one, Anna, Helen, Richard and Robert answered that question. In most cases, they have found something illegal in their suitcases.
After the break, it was time to announce the winners.
James won the Humorous Speech Contests and Richard won the Table Topic Contest. Both of them will be representing the club at the next stage of the contest, which will take place at CASS Business School on 5th October (RSVP here). James and Richard will be competing with the winners from the nearby clubs, so expect a night full of fun and laughs!
Our normal meeting will take place on Monday, 9th October. We are looking forward to seeing you there!
