Club Meeting 22nd January 2018
Leslie Bediade, our club’s president, started the meeting by greeting and welcoming everyone and sharing the story of Toastmasters – from its humble beginnings to the global organisation it is now.
After Leslie’s introduction, Paul has taken the stage. As a Toastmaster of the meeting, Paul was responsible for making everything run smoothly throughout the evening. To help him, Paul had helpers – Cameron and Ian.
Cameron was the Timekeeper. His job was to make sure everyone fits within given time frames. And Ian was the Grammarian, who was listening carefully how our speakers speak and finding interesting usages of the English language to later share with the audience. Ian also introduced the Word of the Day – Euphoria – and encouraged everyone to find a way to put this word into their speeches.
With introductions done, we entered the first part of the meeting – Table Topics. Table Topics is all about short improvised speeches. Table Topics Master (who was Robert) prepared a set of questions which no one knew in advance. He then picked a (un)lucky person from the audience to come on the stage and to answer the question in a minute or two. Martin, Ian, Laura, Beryl, Moez and Neil had to tackle questions about the theme of the meeting (Inspirations).
After the short break, we were ready for the second part of the meeting – prepared speeches.
First was Martin with his first speech at Toastmasters. Martin’s speech was titled Who Am I? where he shared with us his story and his love for poker.
Next was Ned with a speech titled First two months as a Consultant. It was a follow up to Ned’s previous speech where he announced becoming a consultant. In this speech, he told us what he learned along the way.
The third speaker was Conrad explaining to us How being a maker changed me, in which he shared with us how becoming a maker changed his life.
At Toastmasters, we not only provide a space to practice public speaking skills but also give feedback so you can improve. Every speech was evaluated. Moez, Li-Shing and Richard evaluated prepared speeches while Tom evaluated Table Topics speaker. The meeting itself was also evaluated by Marti, our guest from Holborn Speakers club.
The last thing on the agenda was announcing the winners. Throughout the meeting, the audience was casting their votes on who was the best speaker. After counting up the votes, the result were:
Best Speaker Award – Ned Yuen
Best Table Topics Award – Laura Stoddart
Best Evaluator Award – Richard Glover
Our next meeting will be on Monday, 12nd February, at CASS Business School as usual. Please RSVP here: https://www.meetup.com/CASSToastmasters/events/247080090/
